Building Your Credentials
In 11th grade, your focus shifts from exploration to Certification and Networking. This is the "Deep Dive" phase where you start turning interests into documented, verifiable skills that employers and apprenticeship programs can see on paper.
CTE (Career & Technical Education) Tracks
If your high school offers CTE pathways, these are your launchpad. Enroll in tracks like:
- Welding
- Auto-Tech
- Culinary Arts
- CNA (Nursing Assistant)
- IT / Cybersecurity
ℹ️ Strategy Tip
CTE classes are not "easy electives." They are structured career training programs that often include industry-recognized certifications. Treat them with the same seriousness as an AP class.
Stackable Credentials
Aim to earn at least one "Stackable Credential" before graduation. These are industry certifications that build on each other and prove competence to employers:
Stackable Credentials
Industry certifications you can earn in high school.
| Credential | Field | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| OSHA-10 | Construction Safety | Commonly required by employers and many states. Shows you take safety seriously. |
| AWS Certified Welder | Welding | Industry-standard credential (tested to the D1.1 structural code). Opens doors to union apprenticeships. |
| CompTIA A+ | Information Technology | Entry-level IT certification recognized nationwide. |
| ServSafe | Food Service | Required for management-level positions in culinary careers. |
| CPR/First Aid | Health & Safety | Valuable across nearly every industry. Low cost, high impact. |
⚠️ Important
Some certifications expire or require renewal. For example, OSHA-10 has no federal expiration but many employers and local jurisdictions require renewal every 3-5 years. ServSafe is valid for 3-5 years depending on your state. Keep a record of when each credential was issued and when it may need renewal. Add this to your "Project Career" folder.
The "Cold Call" Resilience
Reach out to local unions (IBEW, Plumbers & Pipefitters) or trade associations to ask about their Apprenticeship requirements. This takes courage, but it is one of the most powerful "Understory" moves you can make.
The Driver's License
⚠️ Don't Overlook This
In the workforce, your driver's license is often more important than a SAT score. Ensure you have your license and a clean driving record. Many trade positions require reliable transportation to job sites that change daily.
Summer Internships & Part-Time Work
Secure a paid internship or a part-time job in your field of interest. The key is to document your "Growth Narrative":
The Workforce "Stone Stack"
Workforce Pathways

| Direct Entry | Manufacturing, Logistics | Immediate income with on-the-job training |
| Military Enlistment | Army, Navy, Air Force | Discipline, specific skill training, and GI Bill for later |
💡 Egret's Wisdom
"The foundation of every building is laid by hands that know the weight of a stone. There is no 'higher' or 'lower' path -- only the path where you can stand steady and grow your own legacy."
