Finding Your Path

Finding your "Understory" in early high school (9th and 10th grade) is not about picking a job for the next 40 years. It is about exploration without the ego. Most students feel pressured to pick a "Canopy" career (Doctor, Lawyer, Engineer) before they even know what they enjoy doing on a Tuesday afternoon.

In the EgretEd model, we use the "Spark and Soil" method to find your career interest.

1. The "Spark" Audit (Interest vs. Skill)

A "Spark" is something that makes time move faster when you are doing it.

  • The Curiosity List: For one week, write down every time you say, "I wonder how that works" or "I actually enjoyed that assignment."
  • The "Flow State" Check: What activity makes you forget to check your phone? (Coding, drawing, fixing a bike, debating, organizing a shelf?)

2. Testing the "Soil" (Low-Stakes Exploration)

Do not just Google careers -- experience the environment. A job is 10% the "work" and 90% the "environment."

  • The Micro-Shadow: Ask a family friend or local business owner: "Can I buy you a coffee and ask 3 questions about your job?" (This is the Empowerment pillar in action.)
  • Elective Sampling: Use your 9th and 10th-grade electives to fail cheaply. Take the shop class, the coding class, or the choir class. If you hate it, you have successfully eliminated a path!
  • Informational Interviews:
    • Question 1: What does your "boring" paperwork day look like?
    • Question 2: What is the hardest part of your "Resilience" in this job?

3. The Career Cluster Map

Instead of one job, look at Clusters. This keeps your options open while giving you a direction.

4. The "Deep Dive" Seed (10th Grade)

Once you find a cluster that fits, start a small "Deep Dive" project:

  • Example: If you think you like animals, do not just "want to be a vet." Volunteer at a shelter and start a blog about local pet adoption.
  • Why? This builds a Growth Narrative. Even if you decide not to be a vet, you have proven you can lead a project and communicate effectively.

Which "Vibe" Are You?

Which of these three 'Vibes' sounds most like you right now?

ℹ️ The 90-Day Exploration Plan

Once you identify your vibe, commit to a 90-day exploration that includes micro-projects, resilience checks, and career cluster deep dives. The goal is not to decide your whole future -- it is to gather data about yourself.

💡 Egret's Wisdom

"An egret doesn't fly to the middle of the lake and hope there's fish. It stands still in the shallows and watches the movement of the water. Watch your own interests; they will tell you where to strike."
