Building Your College List

One of the first — and most important — steps in the college application process is building your list. A strong list includes a mix of reach, match, and safety schools.

The Three Categories

Reach Schools

Schools where your academic profile falls below the typical admitted student. You have a chance, but admission is not guaranteed.

Match Schools

Schools where your profile aligns well with the typical admitted student. You have a solid chance of admission.

Safety Schools

Schools where your profile exceeds the typical admitted student. You're very likely to be admitted.

💡 How Many Schools?

Most counselors recommend applying to 8–12 schools: 2–3 reaches, 4–5 matches, and 2–3 safeties.

Factors to Consider

When researching schools, think beyond just rankings:

  • Location — Urban, suburban, or rural? Close to home or far away?
  • Size — Small liberal arts college or large research university?
  • Academic programs — Does the school offer your intended major?
  • Campus culture — What's the social scene like? Greek life? Athletics?
  • Cost and financial aid — What's the net price after aid?
